10 Essential Summer Songs

It’s that time of year again. Vibing, chilling, partying, or simply hanging out, these are the songs I’ve been loving so far this summer.

 Nothing 2 Lose – KYLE

Perfect for: Pregaming

KYLE is on his way to becoming an outright superstar. With a platinum single, Chance The Rapper collaborations, and a Drake-esque look/voice in his arsenal, I see no reason for him to be stopped. “Nothing 2 Lose” exerts a quiet confidence from KYLE that he is here to stay and conquer.

Holding On – The War on Drugs

Perfect for: Road trips

The War on Drugs is what I envision a Bruce Springsteen-led band would sound like in 2017. “Holding On” is a beautifully orchestrated song about letting go of the past in favor of a new beginning. The instrumentation is breathtaking, encompassing the feeling of going on a journey, excited for what’s ahead.

When I Was Yung – Yung Pinch

Perfect for: Reminiscing

Picture a stereotypical California hipster/stoner and you have yourself Yung Pinch. His laid back delivery and simple rhymes are just that, laid back and simple. “When I was Yung” reminisces on chasing girls and getting into shenanigans with your friends back in the days when life was care free.

Get What You Give – Felix Cartal

Perfect for: Enjoying life

This atmospheric song by Vancouver based DJ Felix Cartal, may be my song of the summer. It’s everything you could want in a summer song, combining the familiar lyrics of the classic 1998 anthem “You Get What You Give” by vintage 90s band New Radicals, with a fresh new tropical sound that will make all your worries disappear for a short while. I can’t help but smile and feel positive vibes whenever this song comes on.

Anything – SZA

Perfect for: Escaping

A few weeks ago, TDE’s SZA dropped an absolute killer album, Ctrl, establishing herself as one of the breakout stars of 2017. “Anything” is an underrated track where SZA is down for whatever may come her way. It carries a similar melody to her feature on Schoolboy Q’s “Neva Change”, which was one of my favorite songs of 2016.

A$AP Ferg – Plain Jane

asap ferg

Perfect for: Mobbin’

The second in command of A$AP mob is back on his grind, relaunching the #TrapLordTuesday series. One of his releases, Plain Jane, is a Kirk Knight produced track where Hungry Ham has worked up a new appetite. I loved Ferg and Knight’s previous combination, Flem, and this recent collab does not disappoint.

Fade Away – Sam Feldt

Perfect for: Feelin’ it

Sam Feldt has been dropping hits for the past three years or so while gaining traction throughout Europe. His style is reminiscent of Kygo, bringing a tropical touch to electronic music. His latest, “Fade Away”, is a feel good song about enjoying every moment for what it is. I’m a huge sucker for steel drums, and Feldt uses plenty.

Big Fish – Vince Staples

Perfect for: Ballin’ out

Vince Staples is in his groove on his second single off his latest album, Big Fish Theory. Staples, assisted by Juicy J, examines what it’s like to be a rising star while still having ties to his roots. Produced by Christian Rich, who also produced one of my other favorite Vince Staples songs “Señorita”, crafted a bouncy beat that captures the essence of futuristic hip-hop.

Better – Kaptan

Perfect for: Evening cruises

Kaptan blends pop with indie-rock for an infectious sound that makes for an easy listening experience. His latest release, “Better”, focuses on a bad breakup and contemplating the future. Roll the windows down and let the cool evening summer air brush over your skin while driving with this song on.

Domino Effect – Jimi Tents

Perfect for: Vibin’ with the homies

Jimi Tents is an up and coming MC hailing from Brooklyn that is quickly becoming one of my favorite new artists. His song “Domino Effect” off his latest project I Can’t Go Home, is the culmination of a 21-year old kid gaining traction after emerging from a successful underground career. A smooth beat and flow make this song easy to chill and vibe to.
